I ♥ NY, more than ever.

I’ve got other newness that I could blog about, but it won’t be officially released until Sunday, so I’m going to take a moment to reflect here, I hope you’ll forgive my divergence from elymode for a minute…

I don’t live in New York City, but I grew up 40 minutes away by train and have spent most of my adult life no further than 3 hours away. New York, including Manhattan, is the place I consider “home.” One week after the events of 9/11, I had an appointment in NYC and we decided not to postpone it; after all that would be giving in, and New Yorkers don’t give in. I went down near the site, as close as they let people go, and I will never forget the way there was still smoke rising from the site. I will never forget the hundreds of missing person posters, or the flowers or the candles that seemed to cover every available inch of space.

I drove past Ground Zero yesterday, on my way home from visiting family, and it brought up some very strong feelings. I decided that I needed to channel my energy into something, even if it was something simple. I’ve made this shirt using the famous I ♥ NY MORE THAN EVER logo for all you New Yorkers *waves from the Hudson Valley* and anyone else who wants to show their support today, tomorrow, or any other day.
I ♥ NY

The original I ♥ NY logo was created by Milton Glaser in the mid 1970’s to promote NY tourism, and became a recognized symbol all over the world representing not only the feelings of wonder and excitement appreciated by so many tourists, but also for the love and fierce loyalty felt by New Yorkers for NYC.

In response to the events on 9/11, Milton submitted the redesign seen on this t-shirt to a NY newspaper, and after being printed it began appearing on the street, on subway walls and in people’s windows, reaffirming their love and devotion.

I’ll have this out at my shop for the next few days and then it will probably get put back in the virtual closet ’til next year, so come grab one. (Sorry guys, no men’s version till I learn to make men’s clothing!)

  1. Hi Elysium,
I can’t help but tear up when I read your post. As I also was glued to the TV when it happened. And reading your post, brought back memories from me that day. I remember crying that whole day, and days after that.
This is nice of you to do for USA and most of all NYC!

I have been watching the blogs for the past few days and I have yet to see but maybe three that have posted something about 9/11. That makes me really angry, so I am going to make a couple of post muyself on my blog about 9/11 not being posted more.

Thank you for your hard work and enregy making the shirt. I am heading there now when I click submit.

    Hugs and stay stronge!
    Enid
